Partnering with Indigenous Nations

Chappaquiddick Wampanoag land at the Wasque Reservation

CW has engaged for several years in work with the Native Land Conservancy and a number of Indigenous nations around the Commonwealth toward land rematriation and future Native stewardship of land. Land on Chappaquiddick Island, land on Cape Cod and southeast Massachusetts, land in Hampshire, Franklin, and Worcester Counties, and land elsewhere around Massachusetts will certainly benefit from Indigenous food raising and ecologically sound care of the land as climate change effects become more and more pronounced. One related project, conducted on traditional Wampanoag land in West Tisbury, has involved repeated plant counts on several of the “Homer Watcha” sites under CRs held by The Trustees that have been converted from woods to grassland and scrubland.
